Community Meals

In November 2005, at the request of the YMCA ReConnect Outreach Program staff, St. George’s began to offer a meal for the community on the second Sunday of each month.  The purpose of this dinner is to provide people with a meal on the weekend when the Karing Kitchen is closed.

Volunteers from St. George’s were often joined by Community groups and Churches (to whom we are most grateful) on Saturday mornings for the meal preparation, or on Sundays to serve the food, or to clean up.  Over the years the menu has featured a variety of main courses, but our specialty continued to be roast beef with mashed potatoes, carrots, peas (or turnip), a hearty soup, and a slice of apple pie, with tea, coffee, or juice.

In God’s Providence, the request for this meal came at the same time that St. George’s was considering the renovation of its kitchen facility.

Unfortunately due to COVID-19, the meals can no longer be served as a buffet style sit down dinner and are now offered as a take-out. The meals have become simplified with shepherd's pie, pasta casseroles, beans and wieners, and even cold plates being offered as Sunday dinner choices. The breakfast continues with the offering of boiled eggs, homemade muffins, cheese, cereal bars and juice. As of late, coffee and tea has been set up outside. We are very fortunate that Allen and Nancy Urquhart and the Ladies Progress Club have continued to prepare our dinners each month. Thank you to Fred and Ellen Jeans who hand out the meals each month and to Rev. Deacon Norm Dupuis for his work. We couldn't do it without our volunteer bakers who provide muffins and cookies each month.

If you are interested in learning more about St. George’s Community Dinner, or if you would like to volunteer, please contact the Church Office at 855-5209.

On a final note, our meal begins with a prayer of thanksgiving; and, following the meal – at 5:00 p.m. – everyone is invited to come to Evening Prayer.

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!

To fill a gap that has developed in the community, St. George's has begun serving a daily light breakfast to those in need, as well as opening a dedicated time to use the shower. In the first week, we provided 66 breakfasts and 20 showers.

If you or anyone you know would like to volunteer, please contact the church office.
